A Design Thinking Approach to Literacy
Bring design thinking and the maker movement into your classroom while helping students develop their understanding of plot development. In this maker movement inspired lesson, you will learn how to connect books to the design thinking process and allow students to design solutions to a problem a character faces in the story. Students will learn to use the design thinking process to develop empathy for the characters, find problems in the story that need solutions, and work collaboratively to ideate and design solutions. Students will use easily accessible materials such as cardboard, paper, cups, string, etc. to design a prototype for their solution to help the character solve a problem. In the end, students will have the opportunity to rewrite the story integrating their creation into the story. This hands on approach to understanding character development, conflict, and plot will deepen literacy skills and promote a maker mindset. You will walk away from the session believing that you can bring the makerspace right into your classroom and justify how it connects to CCSS. If you stay for the After Party, you will get to design a solution and be part of the maker experience!

Daily "Critter-cal" Thinking
Wearing ""3-V Glasses"" is an eduprotocol to train students daily to develop critical thinking skills. In a world where the loudest opinion is often taken as fact (even though it may NOT be factual), students need help to navigate successfully through informational noise.

Using baby animal images and any curriculum, ask first, “What do we all see that we agree upon?” Then put on your “3-V Glasses” to identify the assumptions of each perspective. Finally, ask, “If we COULD, solve problem X, how WOULD we go about it, and SHOULD we?” Learn how to leverage Flipgrid, Hyperdocs, Screencastify, and other apps to help students demonstrate their learning.

MISSION INNOVATION: Infusing Design Thinking into Classroom Learning
Design Thinking is not just about Post-Its and cardboard projects. It’s a human-centered process and mindset to tackling complex problems through an empathy lens. By giving students the skills to think and act like a designer, they learn how to solve problems in a way that contributes positively to their community. Not only does using this process increase student engagement, improve critical and collaborative thinking, and foster an understanding of the real-world implications of their learning, Design Thinking also allows students to fail fast and learn by doing rather than avoiding failure by striving for initial perfection. And hey, it’s a lot of fun!
Get an overview of Design Thinking, as well as tips, tricks, and strategies to infuse Design Thinking into traditional content.

Thin Slides [CUE Craft]
CUE Craft Thin Slides is an entry-level, “low floor — high ceiling” type of #eduprotocol for developing students language skills, content knowledge, visual literacy, and creative expression through minimalist, but effective, slide design. Using Google Slides, students rapidly create one-slide, with one image and one word (or a short phrase) using a totally minimalist design (aka, "meme" style) in response to a prompt word, phrase, concept, or theme. The result is a powerful visual communication piece with visual impact and personal meaning for the student. This Thin Slides #eduprotocol meets the CCSS ELA Literacy standards for speaking and listening, writing, and language while also addressing the 4Cs. Amplify the educational power when you add your own academic content or focus. Participants will experience the Thin Slides protocol with a lesson walkthrough on slide graphic design and modeling with feedback. Thin Slides can be used as the anticipatory set for any lesson and as an introductory step to most other #eduprotocols.

Do you have a road map? Enhance student agency with mastery based learning.
Student agency begins with us! Let’s work together to ensure we take ownership of our curriculum and standards. Textbooks are great but in the end, it takes you, a professional educator, to make decisions, and set the stage for student success. Transform teaching and learning in your classroom with a clear road map by embracing standards-based mastery. Learn ways to give students ownership of their learning by unpacking standards, embracing mastery and using it to guide your instruction. In this workshop we will work through some of the principles of mastery-based teaching and learning including setting learning goals based on standards, building your plan and making it accessible to your students. This workshop is designed with engaged conversation in mind. There will be an opportunity to connect with others in the session to address specific grade level applications and questions. I will also share the best tool I have found to manage all of this and help the students ( and parents)  truly understand, their successes and the areas for growth.

The Race Track Classroom - The Specs
Imagine a space where all students are seated in the front row, along the perimeter of the classroom. Think Board walls are directly behind them to work out designs and problems. A 32-point touchscreen from Boxlight is at the front where students can collaborate and write simultaneously on the digital board. Two screens are connected so that projected information is accessible from all angles. Standing or sitting, integrating UDL's flexible seating, every student has the opportunity to be fully engaged in the lesson. Moreover, students can utilize the space in the middle of the room to demonstrate conceptual understanding. This is a classroom designed specifically for teachers to be facilitators while students persevere through new ideas independently or in teams. This is the Race Track Classroom.

Ready for Anything - The big picture of what the future needs from teachers
Lesson design is the exact place where best practice, big picture ideas meet classroom realities. It’s the intersection between being ready for anything, and ready for your specific class. For BOLD in 2019, Jonathan will help attendees map out the big picture, AND guide them in how to practically apply best practice to the classroom.

In this interactive 'Ready for Anything' session > We will look at predictions for how many jobs new waves of tech like AI and robotics will impact, understand what this means for learners (and all of us) and tackle questions like ’How can we map the intangible skills needed'?

Literacy is MORE than just text!
How can we get struggling readers to dive into challenging text while focusing on cognitively heavy concepts? The abundance of multimedia like animated gifs and youtube videos can allow us to scaffold the cognitive load of reading while focusing on concepts and topics like theme, context clues, and even close reading. After building a strong understanding of a concept through multimedia, students are now able to dive into more rigorous text and concepts and feel confident and successful.

Smashing Station-Staycation
You have the devices, and they’re here to stay! For this session, consider these questions as you walk through a CCSS ELA lesson experience within a station rotation model:

What pedagogical elements help create effective, data-driven, learning stations to meet the instructional needs of students?

How might creativity and intentionality transform current classroom environments to create deep and meaningful 21st-century learning experiences within a station-rotation model?

Which lesson design elements should be taken into consideration when developing these stations?

How will Universal Design for Learning elements be a part of the station-rotation experience?

Come to this session for some inspiration and ideas on how to create a lesson for a smashing station-rotation model so that you can truly enjoy your staycation full of rewards (student growth, student self-efficacy, student autonomy, student motivation, and engagement!).

It's All About Me -- And You: Developing Empathy
What is MY point of view? How does it differ from YOUR (or THEIR) point of view?

The answers to these questions are fundamental to understanding the world, one’s self, the day’s lesson in English/math/science/history/etc., or simply the news.

In this lesson, participants will, like students, identify their own strengths, influences, biases, understanding, and the “stuff” they don’t understand about (for example, literature, geometry, genetics, Syrian refugees, or the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017).

We’ll start by focusing on what is most knowable -- ourselves.
WHAT am I (skills, relationships, values)?
WHY am I this way (influences, experiences, preferences)?
HOW can I maintain or change what I am?

Then we’ll pick an area to research “What’s it like to be someone who ….?” (loves poetry, uses geometry in their job, became an astronaut, fled Syria, lost a parent, etc.). Using a myriad of tech tools, we’ll explore how to (1) gather information (Google Power Search, StoryCorps, etc.), (2) sort and prioritize, (3) synthesize using audio and video as well as the written word (Screencastify, GreenScreen by DoInk, ExplainEverything), and (4) present what we’ve created (Flipgrid, Hyperdocs, YouTube).

How might creativity and intentionality transform current classroom environments to create deep and meaningful 21st-century learning experiences within a station-rotation model?

Which lesson design elements should be taken into consideration when developing these stations?

How will Universal Design for Learning elements be a part of the station-rotation experience?

spARCS for Student Motivation
Why do I need to know THIS?!” are the exasperated words of a bored student. No more! Add spARCS in your lesson design to motivate students’ interests. The ARCS motivational design model that helps you connect instruction with students’ goals; gains their attention; adds relevance; builds student confidence; and increases satisfaction with learning.

Participants in this blended lesson design walkthrough will learn and experience the positive effects of adding motivational elements into any lesson that will ""spARC"" and sustain students’ interest using the ARCS Motivational Instructional Design model. The systematic methodology of ARCS helps teachers figure out how to gain learners’ ATTENTION, add RELEVANCE for the learner’s perspective of the lesson, build CONFIDENCE in the learner’s belief they can successfully accomplish the objectives, and increase learner’s SATISFACTION with the lesson outcomes. Sprinkle a little spARCS into your existing lessons to liven up the students' motivation to learn. The walkthrough includes the presentation of tactics used to identify the motivational characteristics of learners, instructional materials, and learning sequences. Stay for the After Party for discussion on how to apply spARCS to your lessons!

Using a myriad of tech tools, we’ll explore how to (1) gather information (Google Power Search, StoryCorps, etc.), (2) sort and prioritize, (3) synthesize using audio and video as well as the written word (Screencastify, GreenScreen by DoInk, ExplainEverything), and (4) present what we’ve created (Flipgrid, Hyperdocs, YouTube).

spARCS for Student Motivation
